Ana Rodrigues, Branford College ’25, is a double major studying the history of art and urban studies from Taunton, Massachusetts (part of YARI-land). During the summer of 2022 she interned at the Museum of Fine Arts in the Department of Contemporary Art as an exhibition support intern for “Frank Bowling’s Americas”. There she tended to the final aspects of the exhibition before installation. Back at Yale, Ana works at the Yale University Art Gallery in the American Paintings and Sculpture curatorial department and as a student guide at the Yale Center for British Art.

Frank Bowling is a Guyana-born British artist, now 88, who lived and worked in New York City from 1966 to 1975. As the MFA explains, “in that time he came into contact with a vibrant and tumultuous art scene, with abstract painting on an explosive rise, heated debates unfolding around Black cultural identity and artistic practice.” Black but not American, and painting in a field of whites, Bowling wrestled to reconcile his abstract expressionism with the social unrest seething across the nation.

This is Bowling’s first major solo museum exhibition in the US, and it runs through April 9, 2023. Read the reviews in The Boston Globe and on WBUR and an artist profile in The New York Times.
